“The Life of Francis Marion” by William Gilmore SimmsThis is a full reproduction of the original text published by Simms in 1844.
Simms readily acknowledges that credible written record of Marion (aka “The Swamp Fox”) and his activities are sparse. He goes on to explain that he “fills in the blanks” very carefully trying to avoid any questionable information, assumptions or imputations. And he cites a goodly array of research materials to keep the story as credible as possible.
Marion's “stomping grounds” were mostly South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia in which he made Life miserable for the British military and their supporters (Tories). Though Wm. Tecumseh Sherman is generally proclaimed the “inventor” of modern warfare with his “total war” philosophy and his famous “March to the Sea” in 1864; one can see many of his ideas already in play during the partisan warfare of the Carolinas circa: American Revolution. The resemblance is even much more pronounced between Marion and Confederate Cavalry General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Simms was a good writer and very talented story-teller. So, besides being about one of the more interesting (and romantic) characters and eras of our history, this somewhat lengthy tome is also an enjoyable read. Be advised, however, that it is written in the wordy, laborious prose that typifies the Victorian era, complete with constant double-negatives, arcane language, convoluted phrasing and many “asides” to the reader, etc. Of course, if writing styles interest or amuse you; you'll enjoy this thorough portrait of the literature of bygone days.

The Life of Francis Marion Gilmore William 9781444466379 Books Reviews
Very well researched and written history. Marion took what he learned from war with the Indians and applied it to the British. His best knowledge was knowing the type of men that he had. I would have liked some more maps to follow what was happening in this very fluid section of the war.
FOR MANY YEARS I HAVE HEARD OF MARION...THE SWAMP FOX. I HAVE EVEN LIVED IN HIS BELOVED "STOMPING GROUNDS" IN SOUTH CAROLINA. I AM TO BEGIN THE NEXT BOOK WRITTEN ABOUT OUR HERO, BY REV. WEEMS. WOULD TO GOD WE HAD MEN OF WAR WITH CHARACTER AS MARION.
Simms almost loses the reader in the first two chapters as he struggles with superlative after superlative to describe his subject--but it is a subject worth the effort of wading through those superlatives to get at. Basically there appears to be not much in the existing written records concerning Francis Marion and his place in history may have been diminished due to events subsequent to Simms' history, i.e., the Civil War.
He was very instrumental in our history of the revolutionary war. He was a citizen of the state of South Carolina which remained in the hands of the Tories for a very long time. We were getting our butts beat in the Southern Campaign. Lincoln had lost, Ethan Allen was new to the campaign and someone was needed to hold the British in check while the Americans regrouped under new leadership. As a military tactician, he was a great master of strategy. He was the master of the swamps. He was never discovered, never flushed, never followed, nor never defeated. He had a courage that never failed and a will that was never defeated during the Southern Campaigns. His corp lacked the necessities to wage a conflict and yet his half naked men, feeding on unsalted pottage, fighting by day and caring for their families by night, surviving in the swamps he was able to keep the light of liberty burning brightly in the south until Gates and Cornwallis were forced north into Virginia. And don't forget that dastardly Tarleton..
The interesting fact about Marion's accomplishments is that there was very little printed about him. His reputation grew from word of mouth and from military engagements which seemed to have no origin nor ending. His corp simply evaporated into the swamps and prevailed on another day from which direction no one really knew. His reputation grew from great accomplishments which were told in stories and poems. And yet no one denied that the "Swamp Fox" actually existed and accomplished many heroic deeds.
This is one of those books that is short on facts but big on dates and battles fought. The Tories had good reason to fear the leader known as Francis Marion. From out of the swamp, maybe as a gas or a vapor, rode a group of men that shot many a nail into the British coffin. They helped safe the Southern Campaign inorder that Yorktown would soon have its day.
Read and enjoy. Your spirit will rise as Marion rides across the dense and swamp lands of South Carolina. He was truly an American heroe.
Did not enjoy this n
Book. Author seemed more intent in sounding off than getting to the gist of Marion
Francis Marion is probably one of the most overlooked Revolutionary generals. Some may be familiar with Francis Marion through the T.V. series about "The Swamp Fox", but this book does not romanticize his exploits as did the series.
Since this book was written in the late 1800's, the prose is very different than a more modern history would be, but a delight to read. Many of the Revolutionary histories deal with the northern battles, so this one is even more interesting as it deals with the South.
I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the American Revolution.
This is a great compilation of the writings from the Revolutionary War timeframe of and about Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox). I've gone through this multiple times, it is such a good source of information. Highly recommend it for the Revolutionary War enthusiast!
